I find them upsetting in lots of ways. While I find the behaviour of the instructors abhorrent, I understand what they were trying to achieve. (Apart from delighting in nastiness.)

If I were to be sent to a war, I would probably be grateful if my training had toughened me ready for it. But that countries treat their young men like this makes wars more likely.

I wish I knew about editors etc. because, like the others, I would like to encourage you to turn this into a book.

LucyLucy Corranderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13743561298706555813noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3342874076830001076.post-70088576449695746342010-07-21T13:31:39.457-07:002010-07-21T13:31:39.457-07:00Nevine - Yep, it was all a game. Honestly, Pat, I'm just fascinated by these accounts. Some of the stuff is unbelievable... I wonder if some of these practices are illegal, now... like punching recruits in the gut. I just don't know how they can get away with that. I had to chuckle at that one. My father wasn't crazy, but he was frequently violent, and emotionally unstable. As I grew up, I discovered the reasons for it, and it helped me cope with it. My response as an adult has been to be the opposite of him-- I'm probably a little too lenient with my kids.
