Top Ten Favorite Songs

To see other top 10 picks, go to the great blog of Alex Cavinaugh

There is no way I can narrow my list to ten. I'd have trouble cutting it down to 100. I omitted Beatles songs, because they might take up the whole list. Except for the first song,  the rest are not in any kind of order.

Time to Say Goodbye – Andrea Bocelli & Sarah Brightman  Link
This is the most beautiful song I've ever heard. I have NEVER made it through without my eyes welling up with tears.  They both did fantastic solo versions of this song. When they sang it together, it was pure magic. If you've ever seen the video it's pretty clear that when it is his turn to sing, Ms. Brightman stares at him like he's a pork chop.

Stairway to HeavenLed Zeppelin  Versus Taurus (you be the judge).

If you are a Led Zeppelin fan, you've got to listen to the link. I'll bet you never heard the background story about this song before.  Not onlyis it my favorite rock song, it was also inspired by my favorite group of all time “Spirit.” On one of Led Zep’s first tours they opened for Spirit, who at that time played a song called Taurus. While some folks accused Led Zeppelin of Plagiarism, the author of the song, Randy California, replied that he was honored that Taurus may have inspired Led Zeppelin.
This is the End – The Doors  Link
There had to be at least one song by the Doors on my list. Some say the lyrics are satanic in nature. It sounds like dark dar poetry to me.
Free Bird – Lynard Skynard  Link
Classic southern rock with one of the all-time best guitar solos.
Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd  Link
Probably the most attractive description of heroin usage ever written. Still an amazing song. If I could pick 100 songs, Pink Floyd would have a few songs on the list I thing.
In My Room – Beach Boys  Link
Hands down, the best harmony ever! Brian Wilson is one of the all-time most creative musicians. EVER...
Layla – Derek and the Dominos  Link
Duane Allman and Eric Clapton.  To me, it’s the best guitar dominated song of all time.
White Room – Cream  Link
Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. I love this song not only because of the music, but because the music was created to encompass a poem by Pete Brown.   Every phrase is four syllables of Pure Genius...

In a white room with black curtains near the station.
Black-roof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings.
Silver horses run down moonbeams in your dark eyes.
Dawn-light smiles on you leaving, my contentment.
I'll wait in this place where the sun never shines;
Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves.
You said no strings could secure you at the station.
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows.
I walked into such a sad time at the station.
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning.
I'll wait in the queue when the trains come back;
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves.
At the party she was kindness in the hard crowd.
Consolation for the old wound now forgotten.
Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes.
She's just dressing, goodbye windows, tired starlings.
I'll sleep in this place with the lonely crowd;
Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves.

  7. I know what you mean about not being able to narrow down the list Pat: the "hot 100" playlist on my computer has 189 tracks, and that's restricting a given artist to just one track (well, apart from the Beatles, Dylan, Pink Floyd, Hendrix and Queen, who are allowed two...Comfortably Numb is one of the Floyd tracks).

  8. "Time to Say a Goodbye", yes, such memories that song brings back! And I do love The Doors, as well. Satanic? I don't think so. I agree with your assessment of "dark poetry" entirely, Pat!

  18. Nice list. I wouldn't put any of them in my top ten but I love almost all of those songs. Especially Layla.

  22. I went through a Doors phase. Something mezmerising about them. Aww, and "In My Room" brings back memories. I loved that song when I was a kid. What do you mean like a Pork Chop? Is it good to be looked at that way or very, very bad?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Great list. I know almost all of them.

  24. Great list, Pat. I am going to listen to some of those songs you linked.

  25. I've never been able to decide on any top 10 or even 20 - it changes so often that the last time I tried - I cringed a few days later. Though I must admit Dark Side is always in my top 10 and the wall in my top somewhere as well. Some great tunes here Patrick, some great tunes indeed.

  26. Now we're talking about stuff I've heard of. Great list. I left the Beatles off my list for the same reason.

  30. You are brave or crazy to attempt a top 10, so congratulations! I would have melted down. I didn't know White Room was from a poem, so thanks for that and for printing it. It's totally brilliant. I saw a video of Cream in concert a couple months ago, and despite the terrible sound quality, all of the dynamic brilliance came flooding back. Haven't we lived in an amazing era for great music? I guess everyone THINKS they have, but I KNOW we have :) Cheers. Fun list. Maybe after I retire sometime this decade (?) I'll try my own list.

  44. Hi, Patrick. Thanks for the "Stairway" link. I think I had heard some talk of that before; I've read a few of the books about Zeppelin.
I thought about adding The Doors to my list, but they just missed the cut.
    Very cool,

  45. Would you beat me to a senseless pulp if I told you my favorite EC song was Pretending? Seriously, would ya?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Vicki - Thanks! I'm glad you like them.

James - Yep, the beginning of the song is almost exactly the same. Thanks for the comment!

Jesse - Of course I would! Not really, if he played on it, then it must be good, right?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ohhh, Time to Say Goodbye is a great choice!!!! Never would have considered that one, but definitely worthy of being selected!

    ReplyDelete
  48. THE BEACH BOYS - Right on!

While "In My Room" didn't make my list, The Boys did make mine with a different tune.

And on my blog, there's an installment about my all-time favorite bars and saloons, therein I mention "In My Room" and tell the story about how I once chased out everyone in a Reno bar with that song except for the bartender and me!

Well, it was still better than shooting a man in Reno "just to watch him die", right? Right?

  49. Cream!! I put "Tales of Brave Ulysses" on one of my earlier music lists. I started a couple of days ago at number 30 and counted down from there. If I hadn't picked "Brave Ulysses", I would have picked "White Room."

Gee, no Justin Timberlack, Usher, JayZ or Justin Bieber?

  54. A very good list. One or two of yours were definitely contenders for mine, thought they ultimately didn't make it.

There is just so much good music out there!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I love this list. You've got the only other list I've come across so far where I know every single song. Thanks for explaining Stairway to Heaven. Didn't know that.

  64. Well I vote for Leonard Cohen and, if you can vote up to ten have to return.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm not sure if I could limit myself to ten but if I did many of these would be on it.

This is the End satanic, nope just very dark. A lot of the music was way back when.

  66. Thank God you never chose Brittney or Justin!!!!!
    Love your picks!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I grow up listened to Pink Lloyd, and they are my favorite! A great list, Pat!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Leovi - Your vote is recorded!

SQ - Thanks! It is indeed hard to limit it to 10.

Dawn - If I had chosen those folks, I'd just have to close up shop here...

Icy BC - Ye[, they are one of my all time favorites also.

Anon - That must have really been good! I saw them also, but many years ago! thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I would add Free Bird and Comfortably Numb to my list if it was allowed to be longer. Nice tunage.

    ReplyDelete
  71. PTM - thanks! I know what you mean. I saw so many songs I hadn't thought about during this thing, that I don't know if I could fit them into a list of 100...

    ReplyDelete
  72. Ah youre such a baby boomer.. lol..
I did a video to Comfortably Numb some years back.. edited to 70's & 80's movies...

    ReplyDelete
  75. Deniz Bevan - thanks so much! I wish I was also.

  76. Mmmmmm . . . . So many songs and so hard to decide. You've definitely picked an awesome list here. How absolutely delightful. I read your list and went back to revisit. Thanks for the ticket on a memory flight.

And thanks for always stopping by to visit. Take care.

    ReplyDelete
  77. OWT - Thanks so much! very hard to limit the list to just 10, or 100... My pleasure!

  78. "The End" is a retelling of the Oedipal legend.

There's a great story, you may have heard, about the Doors performing it early in their career. While they cleaned it up for the album, in concert, Jim sang "Father, I want to kill you. Mother, I want to f**k you!"

They were told by the club owner that if he sang it again, they'd never perform there again. Of course, Morrison sang it again, and they were fired, but once they became big, the guy begged them to come back. They allude to this incident in Oliver Stones move "The Doors," which loved.

I was just posting a couple of Beach Boys songs on my Facebook recently, "Warmth of the Sun," which I hadn't known until recently was about JFK's assassination, and "Don't Worry Baby," my two favorite songs of theirs, though "In My Room" is up there.

Layla is an amazing song! It was put to great use in that scene in Goodfellas. It's one of my father's favorite songs.

I grew up listening to my father's copy of Cream's "Disraeli Gears" (he's 72 to give you a frame of reference.) My faves of theirs are "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and "Badge."

    ReplyDelete
  79. Johhny - First off, thanks for commenting. It's been a while. I remember that about the "End." What an amazing genius Morrison was. He sure did it all his way.

I love you Beachboy picks. They have so many great ones. that's for sure. Goodfellas, what a great movie. A good soundtrack for sure. Tales of Brave Ulysess could have easily been in my top 10. This was much too hard to do! But fun!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Pat, thought I'd let you know that I've been coming back here every now and then to listen to all the songs. I am a dorkhead when it comes to song titles, or names in general... so although each artist name was familiar, I didn't know every song on reading the title and didn't have the time when you posted to go through them. Long-winded, hey? Whew! Anyhooooo.... All brilliant picks, loved to listen, some may not have been my first choice of song for the artist (I could never tire hearing the piano solo in Riders on the Storm), but who cares. But no, I am NOT going to try this... my tastes are too eclectic!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Francisca - Riders on the Storm! You are right, that piano solo was amazing! If I had an expanded list, it would have been in it for sure! I spent a lot of time listening to the picks of others also!
