Fun and Games

"The premise of Alex Cavanuagh's latest blog fest is to list your three most favorite games and why. Board games, card games, RPG, video games, physical games - even mind games!

This is a bit of a tough one for me, so I'm going to "break" the rules a bit and try to name 3 of each category.

Video Games:
1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
3. Golden Eye 007
I liked many more of them, including the early classics like Pacman and others, but these three come to mind. I probably like them the most because they are very involved and take a long time to master.

Card Games:
1. Spades
2. Pinochle
3. Euchre
I know how to play most card games and I'm pretty good at many of them, but these three are my favorites because they involve bidding, trump suits, and take a long time to get really good at.

Board Games:
1. Chess
2. Meh!
3. Meh!
I've never liked board games all that much because I've never been able to stay focused on them for very long.  Chess involves a lot of thinking, but I can't stand it when the other person thinks for very long.

This blog fest is being hosted by the awesome Alex Cavanaugh. If you wish to participate or just see the favorites of other folks, please hit the link!

  1. I've never played chess. Not because I don't think I would be excellent at it but because I think it would breakup my marriage. My husband and I are both too competitive and we would always fight to win. It wouldn't be pretty. Great choices.

  2. Ooh, I was a major card freak! I played countless games with my grandparents.

  3. My da taught me to play chess, so I thought I'll do the same with my eldest - HAAAAAAAA - I'm mortified to admit I couldn't remember even half the moves. That'll teach me for showing off (I doubt I'll ever live it down)..

  4. Meh! must be great you listed it twice... got the rules handy? LOL

  5. I broke the rules, too, or better said, rewrote them to fit the player. Enjoy all your fun and games!

  6. golden eye was completely revolutionary. It changed the way video games were played.

  8. When it comes to video games, I want it to be involved so I get my money's worth.
Thanks for participating in the blogfest!

  9. I loved all three of those video games.

  10. Euchre! I was taught to play that by the other moms on a girlscout camping trip once. it was fun. I know your card games... all of 'em. I can't really play Chess (well, anyway) and am clueless on the others.

  11. Ha! Thanks for the reminder on Euchre--that's a fun one!

  12. we love to play chess, monopoly and mousetrap.

  13. I love to play Euchre. My boyfriend and I used to play my parents all the time and my dad always insisted he wasn't talking across the table but they almost ALWAYS won.

  14. Great choice for number 1 on your video game list. Though I found your number 2 to be at times a bit tedious, but still a good game.

  15. You are so cool. I love board games. I think maybe the reason you don't list some is because you know I could whoop up on you on most of them.

  16. My seven-year-old LOVES chess. He can take the best of them on. He's so excited about Chess camp this summer. That and Basketball.

  17. Nobody even mentioned Duck Hunt! Pfffft.

  18. meh I will be checking this game out. I played chess a few times but never really got the hang of it. =)

  19. I don't know those games, but I am good a breaking rules!

  20. I don't know any of these either, Pat. You're much more of an intellect (e.g., ants in the pants vs chess). Another reason I admire you.

  21. Oh, Zelda was a great game. My husband and I used to play it when we were dating. Played spades all the time in college.

  22. I'd have some difficulty naming my own. I don't know anything about video games. For card games I guess Cribbage is my fave. Board games...hmmm. just don't know. It seems every time I play Monopoly with people we get into a disagreement over the rules. Each person has a traditional way of "bending the rules" and making exceptions. I will tell you though that the scene in the Sopranos where Tony, Carmella, and Bobby and Janice are playing at the lake house is one of my favorites. I love that after the melee Tony has a green house stuck to his cheek that Carmella eventually flicks off. fun post Pat. have a marvelous week.

  23. I tried learning chess, but have only played it against a person a few times--and computers are little help when you need it. :P

  24. I know what you mean about slow play during chess. I prefer getting my you-know-what stomped quickly.

Looked at your poetry. Great stuff!! I likey.

  25. I've played Chess on occasion, but it always has to be reexplained to me when I play and I never really was very competent at the game. I do better with Checkers and did used to play that when I was a kid.

  26. Yeah, it's all fun and games...until someone pokes their eye out! Oh, excuse me, I was channeling my mother for a minute there.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I was born and raaised in Michigan and played Euchre. I don't know of anyone outside the state who plays it. So, have you spent time in Michigan?

  28. Clarissa - I know what you mean. My older brother and I play too many games to count and he couldn't stand to lose.

salaarsen - Me too! I always like card games of all types.

shrinky - Same with me! It's one of those things that you need to do all the rime to stay good at it.

baygirl - Funny! I guess there should have only been one Meh!, because I love scrabble also.

Mary - Rules were meant to be broken!

Budd - I agree with you! My son and I used to play for hours on the one on one mode.

altadenahiker - Meh is always allowed! Otherwise, everything would be Meh!

Alex - My pleasure Alex, thanks for sponsering it!

Oilfield Trash - I'm sure there were others that I just can't remember also.

Hart - I play Euchre and the others on line when I have the time. It seems like I seldom do these days.

Ren - Mousetrap! I forgot about that one. We had a lot of fun with it.

Cake Betch - Oh yeah there was talking. If you play with the same person long enough, you devlope discreet signals.

Tim - You are probably right and I just don't remember...

Betty - Too cool for school! Isn't the best way to rate them? The one's we're good at, we LIKE!

Ciara - I was also playing at that age. I'm pretty sure I was better then, than now...

    Ms A - Okay...Duck Hunt! LOL...

Tiger 85 - I lost interest in it because those that do seem to get the hang of it, play too slow for my ADD'ness...

Brian - That's cause you are a rebel!

Robyn - Please! If that's true, why does my family think I'm so dumb? LOL...

M Pax - Spades just might be my overall favorite game of any type. If you have a decent partner anyways...

Ms Becky - You are so right! Everybody has bastardized the rules to fit their own purposes.

The Golden Eagle - The only reason I played it against computers, is that people play too slow.

Bryce - Yep! That's me also. the faster it goes, the worse I do, but I'd rather lose then be bored.

Arlee - Checkers is a good time passer. I know what you mean about chess.

#1Nana - Too funny! Some one else said that in their post today also! I hope I NEVER channel my mother!

Stephen - I have spent some time there, but I never played Euchre there. I was drinking a lot though, so who knows?

    Nicole - Yep! Loved them...

  29. Euchre? That's a midwesterners game. Are you from Michigan?

  31. I used to love playing chess, too...but HATED it when my opponent would overanalyze! LOL!

  32. Chess almost made my list. I was 7 when my uncle first taught me. By a week's time i was able to beat him (though I think he was east on me). The neighborhood kids in my town used to have tournaments. It was fun!

  33. Spades, euchre, and chess...we would have a good time Pat!

I played chess in high school. Spades and euchre were great for the reasons you mentioned. The strategy and the learing process.

Again welcome back...you've missed a lot of my greatness! :)

  34. I love your card games you chose. But I am a big fan of board games. Just not Monopoly.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love all three of your video game picks! "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" is my favorite of them.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Of all the one I like is chess, but does not play much.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I was about to ask "Meh?, I've never heard of that game before. Is it new?" and then I read the note. I'm kind of traditional when it comes to games; I pretty much stick to the staples: Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, Monopoly and Shanghai Rummy (which requires 4 decks of cards and a lot of bad weather because it can go on forever.)Outdoors, I like frisbie and pitch and putt golf. Video Games? Mmm, notsomuch. - G

  40. Played euchre in university, played scrabble with my mother, play tennis with my honey. That's all she wrote. Haven't heard of most of the ones you list!

  41. Chess was always something I wanted to be really good at. I haven't given up hope yet...

    ReplyDelete
  42. I use to love card games but I haven't played any in awhile. Scrabble and Risk were always my favorite board games.

I've never gotten into RPG I've always preferred FPS. Give me the big guns and turn me loose :). Playing F.E.A.R 3 right now.
