No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

As some of you know, my wife works with organizations that rescue dogs and cats from pounds and shelters, before they can be euthanized.  Many times they are taken from the shelters on the eve of their death.

Yesterday, she and another lady drove about 250 miles in separate vehicles to rescue several dogs. When they got back to the local area, they delivered the dogs to a group that will do everything possible to place them in homes. One of the dogs my wife brought back was a 85 pound Weimaraner. It rode in the back seat of our truck, with no problem.  She dropped it off at a "Weimaraner Rescue" facility.

The dog was in their facility and my wife was on the outside of the fence. She went to slide a bowl of water under the gate to it. But it wasn't the same dog. It looked like it, but it wasn't.  This dog gave her a nasty bite that badly ripped and tore the top of her hand.  They had to sew a huge flap of meat back on.  There's not very many stitches holding it together because dog bites (and human) usually get infected and need lots of room to drain.

Sorry, I know this is pretty graphic. It just goes to show you that, "No good deed goes unpunished!"

Despite this, my wife is bummed that she has to miss her next shift with the rescued cats at our local Petsmart. In case you didn't know, Petsmart doesn't own any of the dogs and cats in their stores. They donate the space, food, utilities, and everything else needed to the support rescue efforts of many organizations countrywide.  They are the leading funder of animal welfare agencies across North America.

Major shout out to them! By providing space to adoption partners in the PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers, homeless pets are given another location and additional opportunity for exposure to the pet-loving public, and the extra time they need to find lifelong, loving homes. Annually, about 400,000 pets find new homes thanks to this effort!

  2. Ouch! That's gonna leave a mark. Kudos and blessings to the wife. May she never allow the fear of punishment, to outweigh the (truly noble) good deeds.

  3. That is unreal!!! Wow she really is doing God's work. I had read stories about people who did that, but never knew anyone personally. Now I can say I do. Well at least I know you. So that's close enough.

  4. Okay, that looks painful. Good on her for doing what she does but what the hell was Karma doing the day she was bit? We also know that Karma is non-transferable so we know that it's nothing that came from you and your wild reckless long haired and mispent youth.

  5. That looks very nasty. I'm sorry to hear of your wife's bad run in. My sister used to do a similar job and I always have great admiration for anyone involved in such a cause. I wish her a quick healing.

  6. Joe - I don't trust 'em either. They're like out-of-control children.

Ms Anthropy - Thanks! She's not even mad at the dog! She's going to continue to that kind of stuff as soon as she can!

Copyboy - It's not the kind of work I can do. It just gets to me too much.

Cal - Maybe my karma rubbed off on her! By the way....Some of your comments I read are better than many people's blog posts!

All of you - Thanks so much for commmenting!

  10. chuck - Her doctor just redressed it. It looks even gnarlier today.

Ms. Streel (lol) - Ahh, she's just trying to get out housework....JUST KIDDING HONEY!!!!

  11. Holy Crap Pat!!! That is intense. I hope it gets better fast, not to mention it is going to be a wicked war wound. I was with my cousin when he was bit in his head by lassie (same type of dog, collie), and he had to have 24 stitches in his head. I'm not a big fan of dogs. They are mostly unpredictable.

  13. people always tend to forget that dogs have no more mental capacity than a two year old child and they proceed to believe that they are four legged Harvard grads. I love dogs, truly, I simply do not trust them to act like anything other than a dog. I am sorry Mrs. Tillet is injured - especially in trying to do the right thing. It is well known that I am a regular at hospitals from injuries often from attempting to do the same, just not with dogs. I hope her recovery is swift and there is no permanent damage in the nerves and muscles. I will meditate on this.

  14. thanks Jhon,
I agree, dogs are okay, just as long as they belong to someone else.

We are most appreciative of your thoughts...

  15. Wow, that looks brutal. Is she okay? Is she in pain? I can't imagine. What a saint she is. That's a big price to pay for being so open hearted.
    Here's to a smooth recovery.

  17. Wow! living out here in the country I have seen and suffered some bites before, but that one has to be one of the worst!
I hope that it heals quickly. The trouble with stitches is that they nip and get itchy.
We have the P.D.S.A. and R.S.P.C.A. here in England and I really admire these people.

  22. Oh god your poor hand, I hope it heals quickly for you, that poor dog what must have been going through its head at that moment, something unpleasant in its up bringing.

I hope they find a way to help the poor dog, so that it never does that again.

  23. That's a nasty looking bite, I hope she if feeling ok. Sorry she had to miss her shift at Petco, our local store also has the volunteers in each weekend.

The dog was probably scared, who knows what kind of a life it has had. Hopefully it will go to a good home where it can feel safe.

  24. her hand is throbbing, but it seems better than yesterday! thanks all...
Unfortunately, they won't even try to get a home for the dog now. If they do, and it bites somebodies kid, they could be blamed. They will just keep it...

  27. Owww... Your wife is amazing. Hope she heals up real quicklike. So glad there are people like her who take the action many of us wish we could take. Good on her, and good on you for supporting her and getting the word out about PetSmart Charities.

  31. There is a special place in heaven for people like your wife. It is sad that we aren't blessed with enough people like her. My hat is off to her.....

  32. I'm sorry your well intentioned wife was bitten while trying to help the rescued dogs.
Its kind and caring people like her that we have to thank for helping to saving the lives of so many animals.

  33. Oh my. That's a serious bite. I got bit last spring trying to catch a stray dog in L.A. It was a painful lesson to be more cautious and aware of dogs' body language. I hope your wife's hand has healed. She's a good person for doing that work. It's a labor of love and the work is never done as there are so many animals needing loving homes - as you know, I'm sure.
